Name?

Q from Mandi about how to pronounce Danil's name.  As far as I know (researched on Google!), it is Dah-NEEL, with the emphasis on the second syllable.

I am probably getting way, way, WAY ahead of myself, but we've thought about his name a lot.  We don't want to mess him up (I'm sure that he knows his name by now!) but Danil just doesn't roll off the tongue in American-ese the way it does in his language.  I think it is a beautiful name when pronounced correctly...I just think it will be constantly mispronounced.  So, we were kind of thinking about changing his name, and keeping Danil as his middle name.

Of course, we have time to think about that.

Friends who have adopted or are in the process...how does that work?  Is it common to change the child's name?

  1. Nika's Russian first name was Veronika, and they called her Nika for short ... which as you know, we still call her. However, we renamed her Addison Veronika ... we just typically go by her nickname, unless she is in trouble ... then it is a combo of her Russian and American names! LOL!

  2. When we adopted Alex and Chelsea we changed their names, it gives them a feeling of belonging. We tried holding onto their heritage with books about the Philippines and pics of them in their country, but their interest is being an American, and that they are!
