This morning Bryan had a dentist appointment at 8am, so I braved the trip out to the orphanage by myself. We have a whole new set of things to think about when we split up. We only have one key to the apartment, which has a sensor thing on it to get us into the building. So whoever doesn't have the key is really really stuck outside. We also only have one cell phone that works here, so who gets to have contact with the outside world?
We ended up splitting it- I got the key because I had to leave last and lock up the apartment, and Bryan got the cell in case he needed to get in touch with Nate, who was taking him to the dentist. It all seemed like a fine plan, until I got home and realized that there was no way for Bryan to call me to let me know that he was on his way home so I could go downstairs and let him into the building. So I waited and waited and waited...and even had Cara call him from her cell, but there was no answer. At this point, I'm starting to get a little worried because he's now been at the dentist for over 4 hours...and I've got visions Orin Scrivello, D.D.S. going through my head.
And then there was a knock at the door, and Bryan was back! He had to wait outside for 20 minutes until someone left the building so he could sneak in. He got his chipped tooth fixed (for $22 including novacaine!) and had been hanging out with Nate for the rest of the morning. Phew!
At the orphanage, Danila was back to his smiley self when I arrived. He ran to me for a hug, and then immediately asked where Papa was. The nanny and I both explained that Papa wasn't here today, and that Mama was here. He seemed satisfied with that answer until 5 seconds later when he asked about Papa again. And then again when we went outside. And again when we went to the pavilion...lol. He loves Bryan :)
It was kind of nice, just the two of us, though (when he finally accepted that Papa wasn't going to jump out from behind a tree and join us). We ate a snack and looked at the photo book, did some flashcards, colored a picture, and played with some of his friends.
It was super cute- we were all happy hanging out by ourselves when he heard the other children come out to play. His little head went up and he had to go look to see who was there. He's such a social little bug. He latched on to two older girls, and did everything that they were doing. They were pretty good natured about it, but you could tell that Danya was like a little annoying brother to them. Danya didn't care, though. He was happy to follow them around :)
He followed the girls up the play structure and down the slide, which is something that I've never seen him do. He always gravitates towards the swing, so I wasn't sure if he was afraid of the slide or what. But he went down no problem, all smiles, and did it again, too!
He was not happy that I was leaving him for lunch, but went back into his groupa much more calmly than he did on Friday. I only wish there was a way to truly make him understand that someday (SOON, I hope!!) he will never have to go back to that orphanage again. That he has a family and a home, and a place in the world.
PS- No news, except that the Layne family got their SDA appointment for their little guy- so happy for them to be moving on and actually having a chance to meet him. That means that something is moving here :)

Danila is so sweet! I love that he has a zillion names. Danila, Danilo, Danil, Zeke...what am I missing?
ReplyDeleteDid I ever tell you that Valentino has a bunch too? Valentino is a family name, so we were supposed to call him by his middle name, Vincent (after St. Vincent's in NYC, a wonderful hospital, where he was born). So we told everyone his name was Vincent, or Vince for short. So someone buys me towels inscribed with Veronica and Vince. But then when we bring him home, big sis Eva seems to like calling him Valentino, so I do too. Then when Veronica started talking and invented "Nino" for short, I was smitten. However, much of our family still calls him Vincent, as does his own father, who is not-so-secretly annoyed at me for screwing up our plans once again! My friends are still confused and don't understand why I can't just pick a darn name. But personally, I like the variety :)
I do apologize for this long digression, but just wanted to give you a chuckle.
